A branch office of the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, was set up in the University of Toronto

A branch office of the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo (IIS/UT) was set up in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, University of Toronto (FASE/UT), Canada and the opening ceremony was conducted on September 7, 2006. This office was established as a part of the project "Global Networking Initiative," and plays a role of the base for collaborative researches in North America, following after those in Europe and Asia. As the first step, "Consortium on Sustainable Materials (COSM)" was organized by the members of FASE/UT and the International Research Center for Sustainable Materials of IIS/UT to promote a collaborative research on sustainable materials from FY2006 to FY2009.

Since it was the first day of the semester, the ceremony started at 8:30AM before classes. Professor Cristina Amon, the Dean of FASE, 11 professors and 10 researchers attended the ceremony from FASE, while Professor Tadashi Watanabe, Vice Director General of IIS, Professors Kazuki Morita, Toru Sasaki, and Tsuyoshi Adachi from IIS. Chaired by Professor Charles Jia, commemorative addresses were given by Professors Amon and Watanabe, followed by those by Professor Javad Mostaghimi, Vice Dean of FASE, and Professor Yu-Ling Cheng, Acting Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, FASE. After the name plate was unveiled by Professors Amon and Morita, the commemorative photos were taken, and friendship was cultivated by the attendants with coffee and snacks.

This office is to be used for the business on research network activities in North America as well as for the stay of any faculties in IIS for collaborative researches, and is already furnished well. Please make good use of the office whenever you visit Toronto.
